Indonesia Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 47 as Rescue Teams Search for Survivors
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Flores Island, killing at least 47 people and causing widespread damage across parts of East Nusa Tenggara. The early-morning earthquake sent frightened residents rushing from buildings as rescuers began searching for survivors amid collapsed structures, landslides and repeated aftershocks.
The latest death toll represents a sharp increase from the initial reports of 20 fatalities. Authorities have warned that the number could change as rescue teams reach more remote communities and continue assessing the destruction.
Death Toll Rises as Rescue Teams Search for Survivors
Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency reported at least 47 deaths following the earthquake, with dozens of other people injured. Rescue workers have been searching damaged buildings and communities for people who may still be trapped beneath rubble.
The disaster has affected several areas of East Nusa Tenggara, including Maumere, Nagekeo and other communities across Flores. Emergency crews have faced difficult conditions while attempting to reach some of the hardest-hit locations.
Strong Earthquake Strikes Near Flores
The earthquake struck early Saturday morning near Flores Island. The U.S. Geological Survey placed the epicenter about 68 kilometers north-northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara and reported a depth of about 10 kilometers. The shallow earthquake produced powerful shaking across nearby communities.
Residents described scenes of panic as buildings shook and people fled their homes. The earthquake was followed by hundreds of aftershocks, increasing concerns about additional damage and making it more dangerous for people to enter weakened structures.
More Than 235 Aftershocks Recorded
The main earthquake was followed by at least 235 aftershocks, with the strongest reaching approximately magnitude 6.2. The continuing seismic activity has complicated rescue operations and kept residents on alert.
Emergency officials have urged people to remain cautious around damaged buildings because additional shaking could cause unstable structures to collapse.
Tsunami Warning Issued and Later Lifted
The earthquake also prompted authorities to issue a tsunami warning for parts of the surrounding region. The warning was later lifted after officials assessed the situation.
However, small tsunami waves were recorded in some coastal locations. Reports indicated that the largest wave reached approximately 1.61 meters in Riung village, underscoring the danger faced by coastal communities immediately after the earthquake.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant as authorities continued monitoring the coastline and aftershocks.
Thousands Evacuated as Damage Mounts
The earthquake damaged or destroyed homes and public infrastructure across affected communities. According to the Associated Press, 157 homes collapsed and nearly 200 more were damaged, while more than 100 public facilities, including schools and churches, were also affected. Around 2,000 residents were moved to temporary shelters.
Landslides and blocked roads have created additional obstacles for emergency crews. Communications and electricity were also disrupted in some areas, making it harder for authorities to determine the full extent of the damage.
Rescue Efforts Hampered by Landslides and Damaged Roads
Nagekeo, one of the areas closest to the earthquake’s epicenter, has faced particularly difficult rescue conditions. Landslides have blocked roads, while damaged infrastructure has isolated some communities.
Emergency teams have been working to reach affected residents while providing medical assistance, temporary shelter and other essential supplies. Some rescue operations have required alternative transportation because road access remains limited.
Indonesia Faces Major Earthquake Emergency
Indonesia is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes because it lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active regions. The latest Flores earthquake has once again highlighted the risks faced by communities across the country’s island provinces.
For now, the priority remains finding survivors, treating the injured and helping displaced families. Officials are continuing to assess damaged areas, while rescue teams search locations that remain difficult to access.
With at least 47 people confirmed dead, the Flores earthquake has become a major disaster for eastern Indonesia. As aftershocks continue and rescue operations remain underway, authorities are expected to provide further updates on casualties, damage and relief efforts.
